The course focuses on both writing and performance and will teach students how to self-express and get comfortable in the rhythm of song and spoken word. It will combine elements of musical theory, improvisation techniques, writing lyrics and collaboration with their peers. Corwin brings along his mobile recording studio to give students an opportunity to record their new tunes. Students will perform their new songs, rhymes and spoken word poems during the final evening concert.
Bio: Corwin Fox
Victoria’s Corwin Fox is well-known for his masterful lyric and melody writing and his unique style of highly contagious personal and political folk songs will have you singing along before you even realize it. In addition to his own musical career that has spanned four albums, Corwin is a sought after music producer, spending much of his time over the last few years recording and producing independent musicians such as Shane Philip, Sarah Metzner, Mamaguroove and Glenna Garramone. Father of two girls, Corwin has a knack for inspiring young people to express themselves through song. In addition to teaching songwriting for young people at Island Mountain Arts last summer, he has also taught at the Washington and Victoria based youth organization, the Power of Hope.
Bio: Kia Kadiri
In the last 5 years, Kia Kadiri has become a west coast phenomenon. Drawing on hip hop, jazz, funk and soul to create a sound that is truly universal, she has emerged as a stand out artist from a scene that has produced some of this country’s most exciting urban artists. In 2001 Kadiri relocated to Vancouver where she was instantly in demand as a live performer, recording artist and conscious member of the urban community performing regularly at benefits like Sistahood and Rock for Choice.
