Course Description:
- This four day workshop will focus on building paintings with the foundational skills of:
- Under painting and its uses
- Building the composition for your painting
- Massing - the building shadows and forms without initial detail
- Various brushwork techniques
- Finding the highlights, reflections and shadows
- Using colour temperature to create visual space.
- Working in oil or acrylic paint you will be immersed in the process of creating your paintings in a wholistic way, where it emerges in front of you as you work.
- Two Step-by-step demonstrations and or exercises per day will help you learn concepts.
- Instructor, Kindrie Grove will be on hand to offer support as you work and to complete all demonstrations in both oil and acrylic.
Supply list
- For Acrylic or Oil: Basic colours:
- Primary blue, I find Phtlalo blue and Ultramarine blue together make a great primary blue
- Alizarin Crimson
- Hansa or lemon Yellow
- Titanium White
- Cadmium Red Light (this can be very hard to mix if your brushes are not totally clean)
- Burnt umber if you like
- Any extenders or mediums that you like to mix with your paint.
- Brushes ( Please bring several large flat brushes, 3 inch wide down to a quarter inch. Small round brush if you like)
- Rags
- Containers for water or thinner
- If painting with oil please bring Ecohouse paint thinner (non-toxic, citrus-based)
- Painting surfaces (Have a selection of small canvases or boards for exercises – primed canvas sheets work great, larger canvas if you prefer for longer projects).
- Please bring a sketchbook for taking notes and working through ideas visually.
- This is a self-directed workshop, which means participants will be painting what they want or are interested in, so please bring any source material you might need, like drawings, photos etc.

Bio
Kindrie Grove is an Alberta-born artist, art educator and author. Her works express her reverence for animals, wild and domestic, as powerful and magnificent creatures. Formal training at the Alberta College of Art and Design has led to her successful career as a professional artist.Kindrie is the author/illustrator of A Field Guide to Horses (Lone Pine Publishing), and has illustrated two children’s books: Little Oolly the Garden Knome (Dravida Publishing) and Claire’s Bear (Dragonfly Media Publishing). She is best known for her large, original oil paintings of wildlife and horses. Studies of wildlife in natural habitats throughout North America and southern Africa have informed Kindrie’s extensive portfolio. Her work is currently featured in galleries across Canada, and in numerous international private and corporate collections including the Toronto Congress Centre’s Kindrie Grove Wing. Also an accomplished sculptor, Kindrie has her works cast into bronze. They represent a timeless and venerable celebration of beauty through the animal form. Kindrie has been teaching others to paint and draw for many years. She runs the Studio Sessions, self-directed art instruction classes geared toward helping people find and activate the best techniques to achieve their own personal self-expression. ~Thursday August 16, 6pm - Dinner and Harp Concert: Enjoy this evening of great food and performances by the instructors of the Harp School running concurrently. Extra tickets can be purchased for the dinner and concert for $50 (tax included): $25 (tax included) for concert only.
~Saturday, August 18, 6pm - Final Night Ceilidh and Potluck Party.

- Registration: A (non refundable) deposit is payable upon registration. Final payment is due no later than seven days before a course begins. Please add 12% HST to adult courses.
- The registration deadline is two weeks before class start. Registrations will be taken after that date, space permitting.
- Refund: There are no refunds on course deposits. If full payment has been made, and a student withdraws from a course, 75% of the workshop fee will be refunded. Note - there are no refunds the final week before classes begin.
- Cancellation Policy: If Island Mountain Arts cancels a course due to insufficient registration, the entire fee will be refunded. Cancellation decisions are made two weeks before course start.
