Course Description:

“ To a nonpainter, oil paint is uninteresting and faintly unpleasant. To a painter, it is the life’s blood: a substance so utterly entrancing, infuriating and ravishingly beautiful that it makes it worthwhile to go back into the studio every morning, year after year, for an entire lifetime. As the decades go by, a painters life becomes a life lived with oil paint, a story told in the thickness of oil. Any history of painting that does not take that obsession seriously is incomplete.”    James Elkins
This course will focus on various oil painting techniques including: “alla prima”(wet on wet), grisaille, glazing, impasto, using coloured grounds and a pallet knife. Artists will be given the opportunity to experiment with various painting mediums and encouraged to try different tactile approaches to creating with oil.
There will also be a secondary focus on the theory, symbolism and psychology of colour.  We will discuss optical effects of colour, historical and cultural meaning, and discover our personal interpretations and relationships to colour.
Bring some drawings you may want to work from, or some fascinating objects from nature or elsewhere. Painting outdoors will be encouraged if weather permits.
Though some experience in drawing and painting will be helpful, this course is suitable for beginner or experienced artists with an interest in painting with oils.
