IMA offered its first Summer School in 1977. IMA operates courses year round through its Annual School of the Arts with courses in winter and summer.

IMA also operates a public gallery that was established 1988 in a restored heritage building, the former Hill Meat Market, at 2323 Pooley St. IMA also stages a number of special events in the gallery, such as concerts, coffeehouses, literary readings and artist presentations.
