Island Mountain Arts Gallery & Wells Community Hall Conference Room, Wells, BC

From October 14th – 16th Island Mountains Arts, in partnership with Quesnel Community Futures, is hosting Art Is Your Business, a conference designed for artists. Drawing workshop leaders from throughout the province, these action packed days, filled with interactive workshops, round table discussions and networking opportunities will provide tools to help artists grow their businesses.

Early Bird Fee:     $75 if paid in full before October 1st, 2011

Regular Fee:        $100 paid in full before October 14th, 2011

Bursary Information
Through the support of local and regional businesses we are able to offer bursaries to help offset the cost of this conference. To apply for a bursary to put against the $100 registration fee please write a few sentences about why you want to attend this conference and why you would like a bursary. Remember to include full contact information. Submissions will be reviewed by a panel and awarded accordingly.

Workshop Descriptions
Island Mountain Arts is a non-profit arts organization currently organizing a Conference held in Wells from October 14th to 16th and will explore business, marketing and networking techniques to help grow business in the arts sector and diversify commerce in BC’s Cariboo Region.
All participants will receive digital and/or hard copies of materials provided by workshop leaders in the form of a memory stick, which is yours to take home, and photocopies where required. Participants are encouraged to bring laptops.

Friday October 14th, 2011
Opening Reception
The conference will start on Friday October 14th at 7:00 pm with a welcoming reception at the Wells Hotel Pub. Participants have the opportunity to meet instructors, discuss their expectations and begin networking with other artists. There will be live music and snacks. All visual arts participants are asked to bring a piece of their artwork for a later workshop.

Saturday October 15th, 2011
Starting the Day
Saturday morning participants gather at the IMA Galley for complimentary coffee, tea and muffins and to take part in the first discussion with Judi Piggott, well known for her SEARCH Program, enterprising artists program and as a strong advocate for arts and culture.  This workshop will help artists recognize their skills and plot their course for the entire weekend.

Branding and Marketing
Donna Dixson understands the challenges of small business operators because she is an entrepreneur to the core. As the owner of a country vacation resort and now as the senior consultant at Flair Innovations, she is very familiar with the challenges and the opportunities small business owners face. Now head of Barkerville’s marketing team, she will discuss the idea of using branding as a marketing tool.

Bios and Presentation – Part One
Harold Rhenisch, an accomplished writer from the Okanagan, will host a workshop exploring how we present ourselves and how we talk about our art. Diction plays a large part in creating a positive impact on the business community and the public. He will help artists use their words to work for them in this two part workshop.

Round Table Discussion: Galleries -  Public and Private, Musical Venues, Festivals and Touring
Galleries – Public & Private
Over lunch visual artists will join curators and owners of private and public galleries. A round table discussion will explore submissions, pricing, creating a body of work and other issues brought up by participants. A catered lunch will be served during the discussion.

Roundtable Discussion: Musical Venues, Festivals and Touring
Musicians will join experienced touring musicians, venue booking agents and concert organizers to learn more about the performing world. During the discussion a catered Lunch will be served.

Roundtable Discussion: The Many Avenues Of Writing
Join vetran writers and learn about their journeys towards success. People write for a variety of reasons and this diverse panel will explore options  in the writing world and will allow participants to ask questions about the ins and out of this literary world while enjoying a catered lunch.

The Creative Entrepreneur
The Creative Entrepreneur is an exploration of creating a creative business. Whether it is a new news publication, becoming a touring rock star, opening your own gallery or teaching your art to others, they all have something in common, being an entrepreneur.  Join co-hosts Marilyn Rummel, Juli Harland, Todd Sullivan, Harold Rhenisch, Judi Piggot and Paula Scott their journey through the ups and downs, successes and failures and attempts to stay one step ahead of the trends of the Art Industry.

A discussion led by Judi Piggott will allow participants to talk about their experiences and help them to see skills within themselves and to overcome personal blocks and embrace the process of this conference.

Dinner Options are slim at this time of Year in Wells so we have arranged an Organic, Clay Oven Pizza dinner by resident Kate Sulis. Now a tradition in Wells these pizzas, fired in the homemade clay oven and eaten by the outdoor fire are delicious and cost $10. Please bring your own drinks.
Murder Mystery
James Douglas, CIRAC Board Member, Actor and Marketing and Communications for Barkerville has organized the evening’s entertainment. Join us at the Wells Hotel at 7:30 for a murder, mystery and fun!

Funding Proposals 
The group will move to the Community Hall Conference Room to learn tricks and techniques to write comprehensive funding applications. Both Graham Kelsey and Annerose Georgeson will draw upon personal experiences including successes and failures to create an understanding about funding bodies and how they work.

Demystifying Social Media
As the web continues to grow and change rapidly, online marketing is no longer an option, it’s a requirement! Shauna Harper will help you tackle social media without getting overwhelmed.

Copyright and Community
After Bill Horne introduces the concept of peer-based support networks, this workshop will present essential copyright information, model contracts for public and commercial exhibitions, as well as reproduction licenses. The workshop is based on the assumption that a well-informed artist who is connected to their peers and community will have a better chance of succeeding in their work. It will include screen as well as oral presentations and build upon the experiences and needs of the participants.

SOCAN Presentation
Through short video presentations and a look at the interactive website, musician can learn about what SOCAN has to offer them.

Round Table Discussion – Community Groups, Their Resources and How to Access Them
Most of us are unaware of the numerous arts and culture based groups in our region and have even less knowledge about their resources and how we as members, can access them. Representatives from CiRAC, IMA, CCACS, The Quesnel Arts Council, the Prince George Arts Council, the 100 Mile Arts Council, the Station Hose Gallery and Community Futures have been invited to this catered lunch to present their organization, its mandate and how we as artists can benefit from them. They will be available for questions as well.

The Accountable Artist
With a few simple spreadsheets and short list of rules Rebecca McCarthy will help whip any artist into a business person…well…she will simplify income and expense reporting and will help make the tax season easier to deal with.

Media and the Arts
Print, Radio, TV, the Web...what media sources are out there and how can we, as artists can use them to promote our work. What are they looking for in terms of stories, press releases and images. Representatives of different sources will come together to unlock the secrets of media.

Wrapping Up
A last session with Judi Piggott will help participants take their new skills and apply them to their lives with a healthy and energetic outlook.

Last but not least artists will fill in evaluation forms aimed at making the next Art Is Your Business conference workshops even better. They will also gather their work and receive a comprehensive list of attendees and their contact information.
